Former Pakistan National Cricket Team cricketer Shoaib Akhtar took a massive dig at Mohammad Hafeez over his comments about players of the 90s not leaving any legacy behind. He mocked the ex-skipper of the team, saying that if the likes of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis didn’t leave the legacy, then who else did.
After the Pakistan National Cricket Team had a debacle in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, some of the former cricketers, especially Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, lashed out at the team. However, players in Mohammad Hafeez, Rashid Latif, and others came out in support of the team, lashing out at players of the 90s.
I am a big fan of 90s players. But when it comes to legacy, they left nothing for Pakistan – Mohammad Hafeez
Mohammad Hafeez took a jibe at the players of the 90s, saying that they didn’t win anything and, hence, they didn’t leave any legacy behind. He said that they were big players but they didn’t inspire them. He had said:
“Winning an ICC event creates inspiration among the fans, among the younger generation. I am a big fan of 90s players. But when it comes to legacy, they left nothing for Pakistan. Neither did they win an ICC event in 1996, 1999, and 2003. They lost badly. They could have won a final, but we lost badly.”
Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis didn’t leave any legacy? Then, who did, you? – Shoaib Akhtar
Shoaib Akhtar, however, came up with a befitting reply for Mohammad Hafeez. He said that Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis won many series on their own for the team, and if they didn’t leave a legacy, then no one else did. Speaking on a TV show he said:
“There are many such series which they won in front of me by Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis. In front of me, both of them together have shown at least 60 ODIs. In front of me, alone, alone. He is telling them. Sir, you didn’t leave any legacy. Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis didn’t leave any legacy? Then, who did, you ?”
Your fan following gets spoiled if you don’t win during the big events – Shoaib Akhtar
Shoaib Akhtar further talked about the performance of the Pakistan team, saying that the fan following gets spoiled if a team fails in the ICC tournaments. He said that players need a bit of certainty.
“Okay, anyways. So, but I am just saying that your fan following gets spoiled if you don’t win during the big events when it comes to international cricket. So, I would suggest, I think our team has good kids. Babar is a great guy. I think, Shaheen, Naseem. All they need is a bit of certainty, a bit of good management,” said Shoaib Akhtar.
“Wo Wasim Akram & Waqar Younis ko keh ra hai sir apny koi legacy ni chori. Fer kinny chori a, tu?” 🤯
